Recycling
Think globally. Act globally.
Toshiba believes that technology demands responsibility. That’s why the company has instituted a number of sweeping initiatives designed to minimize the impact of its electronic products. Ranging from targeted recycling programs to broad-based consumer awareness campaigns, these efforts reach Toshiba customers across the globe. As a result, large quantities of equipment have avoided landfills and experienced a second life as sustainable consumer products. Toshiba recycling initiatives include recycling programs, events and consumer promotions.
Recycling Programs
Toshiba supports sustainability in the global community by providing its customers a program for the trade-in and free recycling of used products. Additionally, customers interested in recycling their Toshiba product boxes may contact our toll free number (866) 486-1275 for instructions. Green Procurement
Green on the inside.
Thanks to innovative procurement standards, Toshiba products are built responsibly from the ground up. In 2000, Toshiba launched a company-wide initiative to promote the green procurement of manufacturing supplies, including environmentally conscious parts, components and raw materials. The program works like this: Toshiba suppliers take a stringent, 22-point environmental performance survey. Priority is then assigned to suppliers with the highest survey scores. The innovative program not only results in greener products — it gives suppliers the incentives and resources needed to improve their environmental practices. At Toshiba, one green turn deserves another.
Regulatory Compliance
Going above and beyond regulatory compliance.
Toshiba prides itself on being a responsible manufacturer and goes above and beyond by diligently following the guidelines established by several European directives.
WEEE Directive
The European directive on waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) protects the environment by promoting the reuse, recycling and recovery of electronic materials. Toshiba proudly follows WEEE regulations for the following lines of products, including:
- Computer systems
- Home entertainment
- Medical imaging systems
- Storage devices
- Print, copy, fax, scan and mail
- Store automation and barcode printing
RoHS Directive
The European directive on the restriction of use of certain hazardous chemicals (RoHS) is designed to reduce the use of substances that may pose risks to human health or the environment. Toshiba has long followed the guidelines of the RoHS directive and limits the following hazardous materials in its products:
- Lead
- Mercury
- Cadmium
- Hexavalent chromium
- Polybrominated biphenyls
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers
EPEAT
Less is more.
Toshiba is proud to be a registered manufacturer with EPEAT, which stands for the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool. EPEAT helps government technology purchasers compare and evaluate computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes. All EPEAT-registered computers have reduced levels of cadmium, lead and mercury for an environmentally conscious approach that benefits both technology users and the environment. EPEAT computers are also more energy efficient and easier to upgrade and recycle.
While EPEAT is a fairly recent program, Toshiba has long supported progressive environmental efforts. Toshiba employs an approach to conservation that encompasses the entire lifecycle of a product. By participating in programs like EPEAT, Toshiba continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the environment.

Factor T
Environmental responsibility is always a factor.
Toshiba has responsibility down to a science. With Factor T, Toshiba has created a unique indictor that can reveal the eco-efficiency of any Toshiba product. Here’s how it works: Factor T uses a mathematical formula to balance the value of a product with its overall environmental impact. The resulting number is then used to determine benchmarks for improvement.
With a storied history of innovation, Toshiba strives to constantly improve its products. While other manufacturers speak about improving environmental practices, Toshiba actually quantifies the goal with programs like Factor T. By leveraging Factor T, Toshiba hopes to double the eco-efficiency of all Toshiba products by 2010. Toshiba calculates factors for a diverse range of products, including:
- Air conditioners
- Copier machines
- Dishwashers
- Fuel cells
- Heaters
- Medical systems
- Notebook PCs
- POS Terminals
- Servers
- Washing machines
