Two Towns Embark on the Road to Excitement as Production for Toshiba's "Reality" Webcast Nears Completion

IRVINE, Calif. — July 16, 2009 — Toshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. is proud to present the competing casts for the Toshiba Laptops reality Webcast. They are anything but boring and normal—but they all come from there. Boring, Ore. and Normal, Ill. are the two towns slated to host Toshiba's contest to determine which town's residents using Toshiba technology is the more exciting place.

Filming will take place with video postings on MySpace beginning Monday, July 27th and online voting each week. At the end of the Webcast, Toshiba will donate $15,000 worth of laptop computers to the winner's school district.

"We look at this project as a fun and effective way of getting our message across," said Ron Smith, vice president of marketing, Digital Products Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. "Beyond the name play and friendly contest, we are making the point that laptop computers have gone well beyond their 'techie' status. Everyday Americans are harnessing this technology to make a real difference in their lives and communities."

The cast in Boring (named in the early 1900s for resident W. H. Boring), includes:

  • Garrett Eisert: An 18-year-old punk rocker. Eisert can't count the ways a Toshiba Laptop would make a difference—from creating videos to editing music.
  • Elizabeth Fornier: Owner of the local mortuary and promoter of Green Burials, Fornier is interested in building a Website for her business.
  • Andy Welk: Welk is the de facto mayor of unincorporated Boring. He's interested in shooting public safety videos and editing them on his laptop.
  • Amy Morrison: Morrison is the only woman firefighter in Boring. Amy plans to help Welk with the safety video, as well as promote her own passion of educating people about CPR—through video, photos, etc.
  • Mike McGuire: McGuire is the stationhouse cook, and at 57, the oldest recruit. He'd like to shoot and edit a Boring Firefighters Calendar.
  • Codi Sorenson: A high school sophomore and budding documentarian, Sorenson would like to make a film about Boring, proving to the world that the town is anything but.

The cast in Normal (a reference to the "normal school" that is now Illinois State University) includes:

  • Mikey Lentz: Lentz travels across the Midwest making films about skateboarding. His "B-Town ThroDown" drew 200 kids from the area to compete.
  • Deborah Senger: Senger is a certified ghost investigator, who would like to give an online class on the subject and conduct a video-documented tour of a haunted site.
  • Chad Bevers: President of The Abnormal Brewers home brewing club, a 20-year Normal institution that raises money for charities by donating beer for sale at fundraisers, Bevers would like to educate the public about brewing a better beer.
  • Katie Tilley: The house manager at Normal's Destihl Restaurant, Tilley would like to create a community event, called Beer 101—giving her a common interest with Bevers.
  • Amy Endicott: Endicott is a financial professional and aspiring photographer who is so normal, she actually lives on Normal Ave. She'd like to do a photo retrospective of the town's people, history, culture and architecture.
